NJ Turnpike crash: One person was killed and more than a dozen others were injured in a 40-car pileup on the New Jersey Turnpike that officials have called a “freak” accident that was caused in part by icing conditions on the highway. State police say that icy conditions were thought to have played a role in the crashes. The accident occurred between exits 8 and 9 on the NJ Turnpike.
Turnpike authorities say that had the crash could have been avoided entirely if it happened just a few minutes later. Trucks were salting the roads on the highway and were just minutes away from the spot when the cars crashed.
New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner and NJ Turnpike Authority Chairman Jamie Fox ordered a review of the accident, including of weather conditions and the Turnpike’s winter operations plan and execution, along with vehicle speed and other contributing factors.
