The Occupational Safety & Health Administration’s (OSHA) top ten most commonly cited standards for 2014:
1. Fall protection (Construction)
2. Hazard communication (Construction)
3. Scaffolding (Construction)
4. Respiratory protection
5. Powered industrial trucks
6. Lockout/tagout
7. Ladders (Construction)
8. Electrical: wiring
9. Machine guarding
10. Electrical: systems design
These are the most common workplace hazards. This list was taken from the most frequently reported standards from October 1, 2013 to September 30, 2014. As you can see, four of the top ten are construction hazards. Falls from elevations are the number one cause of deaths in construction site accidents. The employer shall determine if the walking/working surfaces on which its employees are to work have the strength and structural integrity to support employees safely. Employees shall be allowed to work on those surfaces only when the surfaces have the requisite strength and structural integrity.
