General Motors (GM) has recently expanded their recall for faulty ignition switches in specific models, stating the number of car fatalities involved are now up to 13. There have been numerous injuries because of this dangerous problem as well. The total amount of vehicles that have been affected is estimated to be about 1.37 million. According to GM, heavy key rings or going off road may have caused the affected ignition switches to be moved out of the “run” position and air bags not to be deployed in accidents.
GM is notifying owners to bring their vehicles to a dealer who will replace the ignition switch at no charge. They are also advising owners to avoid having anything other than the car keys hanging on their key chain. The weight of other objects can make it more likely the key will accidentally move out of place.
