Jason Pierre Paul, the defensive end of the New York Giants, injured his hand in a fireworks accident on July 4, 2015. He was admitted to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach, Fla., for treatment. The NFL confirmed the incident on Sunday evening, noting that it could “potentially impact Pierre-Paul’s future with the Giants.” However, it was later reported that his injuries were burns on his palm and three fingers, and possible nerve damage. Therefore, it would prove to be not career threatening, but his prognosis is still unclear.
Pierre-Paul himself had posted a video online of himself and his infant son near to what appears to be the van that was full of fireworks.
The timing could not be worse for Pierre-Paul, who has yet to convince the Giants to commit to him with another long-term contract. The Giants would be fine with letting Pierre-Paul play out the 2015 season on the $14.8 million franchise number and be eligible for free agency again next year. Per NFL rules, the sides have until July 15 to negotiate a long-term deal. After that time, should he sign the tender offer, Pierre-Paul would be locked into a one-year contract for 2015.
This is not the first time a prominent Giants player was involved in a serious and controversial accident around a holiday. Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself outside a nightclub in New York two days after Thanksgiving in 2008.
