On Tuesday, the owner of American Pharoah, who hopes to claim the Triple Crown this weekend in New York, was hit with a $10 million libel lawsuit. The suit was field by the lawyer for a convicted felon who claims Zayat left him with the $1.65 million tab for a gambling debt. Zayat has claimed this is a lie and that the individual is a fraud.
Ahmed Zayat was saddened by the lawsuit filed against him when he spoke with the media at Belmont Park earlier this week. Attorney Joseph Bainton claims Zayat made malicious statements about him that he knew were false.
Zayat’s attorney, Joseph Vann, stated: “We believe the lawsuit filed against our client today has no legal merit, we expect it will be thrown out by the court, and our client intends to file a malicious prosecution action after we prevail if warranted.”
American Pharoah will attempt to become the first horse in 37 years to win the Triple Crown this Saturday, June 6th, at Belmont Park.
