Pool SafetyWhile the summer brings sun in the fun, accidents do happen. Slip and fall injuries and drowning injuries are two of the most common pool accidents. Keep your summer safe with some of these helpful tips:

 

  • One in five Americans admit to peeing in the pool. When urine mixes with pool chemicals like chlorine, it can create highly toxic byproducts that can damage your heart, lungs, and central nervous system. *American Chemical Society
  • Drowning is the #1 case of death for children ages 1-4. Keep your gates closed when you are not outdoors and make any effort necessary to avoid accidents for children. For above-ground pools, close ladders and make them unreachable for children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 83% of a child’s risk of drowning is reduced when a pool is surrounded by a fence.
  • Alcohol is involved in 70% of adult deaths associated with water recreation. Use judgment if you plan to use the pool when you consuming alcohol.
  • Shower before and after leaving a pool to avoid sharing any bacteria.
  • Know how to swim properly. Formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by as much as 88%.
